How Important Is Insurance During Surrogacy?

Updated: Oct 10

Surrogacy can be such a wonderfully personal experience for the parents and surrogates alike! It is also a journey that involves extensive financial, medical and legal preparation which is why insurance plays such a vital role in a surrogate’s journey. These costs will be the responsibility of the intended parents to make sure that the surrogate is insured. Now of course there are different types of insurance to consider, with medical coverage being the most obvious. This is to pay for expenses associated with pregnancy and birth. Organ Loss Insurance is also highly recommended. This covers the cost of any medical complications that may occur at the time of pregnancy. These costs are not always medical, however. A policy may cover a surrogate who has lost wages due to being on bedrest. A life insurance policy is also extremely crucial. We understand how difficult this conversation can be, but this may be something very important to think about. For the surrogate, this means that their family is protected, and costs are covered in the unlikely but not impossible event that something happens to the surrogate during the pregnancy. Laws do not require surrogates to have insurance in most states. However, agencies (like ours) and attorneys that work in this field insist upon it. Even when things go perfectly, medical expenses can be quite costly. Now if you include any unexpected incidents, you can expect those expenses to catapult. Researching and choosing the proper insurance can help you avoid these types of mishaps. Another important thing to note is when to secure insurance for your surrogate. The proper answer would be before the surrogate gets pregnant as there is often a lot of paperwork and procedures to get through before your GC is covered. This also ensures that the implanted embryo is covered by their health insurance as well. Once the baby is born, however, intended parents will need to find a new coverage plan to insure the baby post-birth.
